Instagram and Pinterest have changed the interior design game for the better, with trends emerging from their feeds quicker than you can say ‘Scandinavian’.Because of this fast pace, it can be hard to predict just what will emerge as design frontrunners in 2018, but we’ve given it a go anyway! Here are the moves and shakes the team at Cullen and Cranberry Design are expecting in 2018:
Colour
Strong kitchen colours are back – think Gwyneth Paltrow’s gorgeous green and brass kitchen. There will be nary a white kitchen in sight, with the gloss look moving from white to shiny brass, waxed solid timber and wallpapers.
Texture
Luxe fabrics are going to give way to textural ones – sheer curtains are going to have more texture, with that crinkly worn-in look featuring. Folk details and craftsmanship will continue to appear, while linens and velvets will start to show up in stronger colours than before. Leather will also make a return appearance, but with added visual elements – think interesting colours, pleats, stitching and flanged edges.
Cork
The versatility of cork is set to be appreciated once more – environmentally sound, acoustically fantastic and soft under foot, it’s the ideal material for a variety of surfaces. It will appear in wall cladding and flooring, as well as some left-of-centre spots.
Loving Local
Locally made, well designed and environmentally sound products are going to come to the fore. The mass market is no more – the focus will be on industries closer to home, with an emphasis on unique designs. Builders and designers are working are working closely together to enable high-end building projects to be sustainable from concept to completion.
